St Cathryn’s news

2016-06-29 06:00

SAINT Cathryn’s match-play final was played over the weekend in conjunction with the Farmers’ Agri-care monthly mug on 25 June.

Although the format of medal changes the tactical planning to play match play, the eight players coped well with the two formats, and set off early Saturday morning on a frosted first tee.

The eight players were selected by the final standings they ended in the Tuta Carriers Club Championships played a few weeks ago.

Neill Manser came off the bench like player 23, to fill the vacancy that arose when Carl Groenewald couldn't make the day, as well as Liekie Steyn, who stood in for Merwin Rabe.

Draws were done as follows: Deon van Dyk vs Neill Manser, Fanie van Wyk vs Brent Barkhuizen, Dieter Meyer vs Liekie Steyn and Lawrence Savage vs Jarad Manser.

With most golf courses only having 18 holes, Dieter, as happened in 2015, had to play 19 holes to try and beat Liekie as they were all square after 18 holes. Liekie beat Dieter.

Deon beat Neill five and four and Jarad beat Lawrence four and three. Lawrence walking with a limp, still carrying the wounds of finishing the Comrades. A golfer, who would like to stay anonymous, said Lawrence possibly lost because of the surprise date someone organised him for the afternoon - Brent lost to Fanie five and four.

At St Cathryn's the semi-final is played in the afternoon after the mornings play. Players are allowed to use carts, but the finals on Sunday was back to walking. Jarad beat Liekie four and three and Deon beat Fanie five and four and all was set for a very exciting Sunday morning final.

On Sunday in the finals, at the half-way stage Jarad was four holes up and Deon fought back, and despite getting an eagle on the par 5 16th , the pressure got to him, and Jarad won the match play with two and one. Well done to our champion.

Results of the Farmers’ Agri-care mug:

1st Deon van Dyk nett 64

2nd Jarad Manser nett 67

3rd Neill Manser nett 70

Best stableford: Jarad Manser .

The Captains putter was awarded to the captain himself - Brent Barkhuizen.

One golfer so excited to get away to play golf, left-handed player Keith, left his clubs at home and only realised this when he got to the golf course. Home is in Mandeni and although we have lots of clubs to loan to visitors, the pro shop at St Cathryn's does not have any spare left-handed sets - eidsh.

The second leg of the Tri-angular is to be played this Sunday at Mandini. Cost R150 per player, green fees, halftime and lunch included. Shared transport can be arranged. Time to be confirmed. Please contact Piet should you be able to play.

This Friday 1 July, the clubhouse will be open and we will "Build a Burger" please let us know by Thursday 6pm should you want to join us. Please phone Piet on 083 269 1661 or SMS to book for golf and/or meals.
