Talk on ‘secret life of butterflies’ next month

2016-04-27 06:00

THE knee-jerk reaction of most gardeners, when they notice a fat caterpillar chewing contentedly at the leaves of their plants, is to reach for the insecticide spray bottle. Yet, given a chance to chew a few more leaves, that nasty caterpillar will metamorphose into a beautiful butterfly or moth.

At the next Greytown Garden Club meeting on Tuesday 10 May at Greytown Lutheran Church in (Voortrekker Street), nationally recognised local lepidopterist, Kevin Cockburn, will present a fascinating introduction into the intriguing world of butterflies and moths found in gardens. Having spent many years scouring the countryside observing the habitats and habits of these beautiful jewels of the air, their specific food preferences and their fascinating life cycles, Kevin is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about his topic.

The meeting begins at 9am with registration and the talk at 9.30am, after which tea will be served. A selection of informative and useful books, from butterfly and moth field identification guides to gardening for butterflies, will be available for purchase. Members are encouraged to bring a friend to introduce to the enriching experience of garden club.
