Tax season 2017 now open

2017-07-19 06:01

THE 2017 tax season officially opened on July 1 for e-filers to complete and submit their 2017 personal income for the 2016/17 tax year.

For the bulk of personal income taxpayers, July to November is the period to complete and submit returns.

Taxpayers who do not have to submit an income tax return are those whose:

• total salary before tax is not more than R360 000 and

• only receive employment income from one employer for the full year of assessment;

• have no other form of income from another job; and

• do not have any additional allowable tax deductions — medical, travel, etc.

It is important to ensure that all the documentation required in the return and by SARS is complete and correct. If you are not sure, seek advice from the SARS call-back centre on medical deductions, disability claims, retirement annuity fund contributions, etc.

E-filers requiring help should make use of the free Help-You-eFile service by clicking on that icon on e-filing and following the prompts. This service is available during office hours.

Taxpayers are warned not to fall victim to tax identity fraud — protect your tax information, login name and password. SARS will never request a taxpayer’s banking or personal details in any correspondence through post, e-mail or SMS.

Non provisional taxpayers have until November 24 to file and provisional taxpayers have until January 31 to e-file the submission of their returns.

Manual submissions, through the post or at SARS drop boxes, must be made by September 22, 2017.
