FOR those who have wondered just how much honourable councillors earn to serve their communities, the latest upper limits of salaries, allowances and benefits, as applicable to the different municipality grades were published in the 21 December, 2015, Government Gazette.

Umvoti is a Grade 2 municipality based on total population and total municipal income, which means that the upper limits of the total remuneration package for three top full-time officers - the mayor, deputy mayor and speaker are:

Mayor: R709 766 per annum

Speaker: R606 410 per annum

Deputy mayor: R606 410 per annum.

Cellphone allowance of R20 868 per annum, R3 600 for mobile data per annum.

In addition, there is R213 000 per month for the mayor’s security. As reported previously, personal security for the mayor and councillors are subject to a threat-and-risk analysis conducted by SAPS, but it is alleged that this has not been done and the security services are being provided at the cost of Umvoti residents.

Exco councillors receive R532 323, while part-time councillors (not full-time) are paid R213 939 per annum.

This year is the year of local government elections and political parties are well into gear in Umvoti - kicking off public gatherings with an ANC rally this Sunday.
At this stage no date for the elections has been set, but guesstimates range from May to August. Voter registrations are scheduled to take place on 5 and 6 March and 9 and 10 April.

As a result of the new demarcations, Umvoti will have 14 wards and 27 councillors.
