Tribute to Ismail Moola

2017-04-26 06:02

WELL known for his total commitment to the Greytown community Ismail Moola was regarded as a “champion of the poor of the poorest”.

Born on the 22 August, 1934 he died on 23 March at the age of 82.

Ismail was a councillor during the transitional period of the merger between Enhlalakahle Town Committee and Greytown Council.
He was one of the very few councillors who took the trouble of the plight of the residents of Tin Town and other informal settlements to heart. He would walk from shack to shack to assist in solving problems.

Very involved with all aspects affecting the well-being of the community Ismail was one of the founder members of the longest serving emergency centre in KZN Greytown 911 centre, and an active member of the Greytown Community for Law and Order and the Policing Forum.

He was famous for drawing up petitions to present to various authorities and was not afraid to stand his ground on any matter affecting the citizens of this town especially on service delivery matters.

One of the memorable contributions was when the street names of Greytown were changed. When asked for suggestions he was quick to say Cooper Street must be changed to Moola Street. On being asked which “Moola” he was  referring to, he answered promptly and modestly, “any Moola”.
