THE “end-of-fire-season” braai was held on Friday evening at the Beehive. According to the KZN FPA, fire season is considered to be closed once a minimum of 50mm of rain has been received and regular summer weather patterns are experienced. The rain that did fall on Friday was most welcome and certainly added to a most jovial evening.

At the beginning of the 2015 fire season, it was predicted that due to the current drought conditions in the Umvoti area, the district was going to experience a very busy and long fire season. However, although the fire season has not officially ended, the opposite has luckily occurred, in that the area has experienced a fairly quiet season.

Seventy six incidents were reported in 2015 compared to 136 incidents in 2014. The total area burnt to date in 2015 was 834 hectare compared to 2 011ha in 2014.

There are a number of factors that have contributed to this reduction and the public must be complimented on their efforts shown towards fire awareness.

As we approach summer it must be noted that conditions are still extremely dry and the possibility of a wild fires and lightning strikes are still a risk.
