THE Umvoti CMC held its annual Grade 12 awards on Saturday, 11 March at Greytown High School.

Guests included Grade 12 teachers, principals, RCL representatives, SGB members, Sadtu and CTU-ATU, Umzinyathi District representatives, including Mr SW Keswa, acting director, the MEC communication team, sponsors and more.

Umvoti Mayor Councillor Thami Ngubane, welcomed the guests, who advised pupils that a budget was set aside to assist them with registration fees at higher education institutions. Individual cases were to be presented to his office.

Ms NE Mkhize (CES Circuit Management: Umvoti) presented an overview of the 2016 Grade 12 results and praised schools on the improvement of the results from the previous year. The 2017 pass target is 75%

Keynote speaker, Mr Chris Ndlela emphasised that quality and effective teaching and learning must be a priority for teachers and pupils, alcohol and substance abuse must stop, schools must be a safe place for learning, pupils must be committed to learning and the culture of respect needed to be revived at all levels.

The top five achievers in the Umvoti CMC, as well as the top performing pupils in individual subjects were awarded - Shamantha Naicker (Greytown Secondary). Nonhlanhla Zakwe (Greytown High), Wandile Ngubane (Greytown Secondary), Ziyanda Dludla (Greytown High) and Lihlithemba Zondi (Greytown High). Each received R5 000 towards their studies, while the top performing pupils per subject received R2 000. These much-appreciated awards were sponsored by the Umvoti Municipality.

The top 10 performing schools in the CMC received certificates while the top teacher per subject received a certificate as well as a Tablet – again sponsored by the Umvoti Municipality. A total of 11 Tablets were issued.

The function ended with entertainment by pupils and a meal. Umvoti CMC expressed its appreciation for the generosity of sponsors.
