Weather update

2016-02-10 06:00

ALTHOUGH it has been an unexpected week of rain - with totals varying from 30mm to 80mm, Lake Merthley has just moved up to 20.28% - still a long way to go before there is any thought of reducing water restrictions.

Following up on a number of queries the Greytown Gazette requested information from Umzinyathi, the water service provider for Umvoti, asking why Enhlalakahle residents have not had water. Their response:

"The situation in Nhlalakahle is being attended to urgently by a team who have identified that one valve was closed instead of being open. This is being investigated as a matter of urgency. In addition the PRV which regulates the pressure from the plant to the township was adjusted to increase the pressure and volumes of water. The valve is opened from 4am until 10.30am daily to supply more water.

“Additional water from bore holes is being used to augment the supply to the township. The volume required by the residents is high and the reticulation system takes too long to fill up.
More investigation are being carried out to see why Mncane Road and Longhomes are only being affected.''

To a further query on the water supply to Mbuba where there has been no water since Christmas, Umzinyathi replied that there had been water interruptions due to rusted and rotting steel pipes underground which leaked - these are now being replaced by 110mclass 16 PVC pipes. A contractor was expected to start work on this on Monday.

Once again an appeal to all to use water sparingly and report leaks - water is life.
