IT may sound like an oversimplification but families who spend time together are more likely to stay together.  Playing together is an essential part of happy and healthy relationships. Children need discipline, structure and rules but they also need their parents to have fun with them.

Playing games allows families to talk and laugh and lighten up together.
The bonding communication and laughter of games will keep families close and secure. Play creates a sense of togetherness and support - a sense of belonging.

Many families have stressful schedules with parents facing challenging job demands and children engaging in many extracurricular activities.
Some families find there is little time left for family activities. For many families, play is the missing ingredient which glues them together. Think about putting a team together for the winter hockey league, so your family gets to play sport together.

Wembley College recently hosted its third season of the very successful, summer, league hockey. There were 14 teams this year, made up of four girls and four boys in each team. Pupils from Grade 6 and above are allowed to participate in the league to encourage and improve hockey skills.

Many of the teams were made up of family members.  The majority of the Yeadon family and one of the Corbishley clan combined to form the Plennegy Panthers. The Martens, Meyers, and Steyns combined to form Bullets and Babs, and the Chiazzaris formed the formidable Core. All these teams are a combination of family, community and school players.
Bullets and Babs and Plennegy Panthers made it to third and fourth position. Rain delayed the final game. The Core was the overall winner of the league. Family teams sealed the deal in the tournament. This is a proven fact. The best way to maintain a family unity is through a “shared passion”.

Hockey creates an important sense of community. Well done to Garth Larkan from Wembley College who organises and puts together the summer and winter hockey leagues. If you or your family would like to participate in the winter league, contact Garth Larkin on 079 877 8153.
