On behalf of the Foundation Phase we would like to thank Mrs Webb for all the wonderful years she has spent preparing the little ones for reading and working in libraries. Her kind nature, smiling demeanor and love of books has ensured that she has become a firm favourite with the children in our phase. We wish her the best of everything for her retirement in Pietermaritzburg. Hamba kahle, and please visit soon.

ON Wednesday 9 March, the Summer League finals were played despite the heavy rain. Both the A and B league finals were played in great spirit.

In the A league, Hurricanes came out on top, winning 2-0, after a hard-fought win against a young Core team.

In the B league, Starbucks played against Astronoughts, which is made up of Wembley pupils. After going to penalty shoot-outs, the Astronoughts managed to scrape through for the win.

We would like to thank all the players for a great season and a very special thank you goes to all the young umpires who volunteered for us.

The establishment of the Wembley College Umpiring Academy has been a valuable addition to the Summer League hockey tournament. Wembley pupils had the opportunity to be mentored while learning a new skill, and they have grown in confidence throughout the term.

There is a nationwide shortage of people (in particular, young people) interested in pursuing this aspect of the game, and it is an area that desperately needs to be focussed on.

From a country district hockey perspective, we are constantly struggling to find people willing and able to assist with umpiring every week, and we are extremely grateful to Wembley, and Gareth, for driving this initiative and for contributing to the growth of the sport as a whole. We look forward to seeing the academy grow from strength to strength in the future and the OSHC would be happy to help out wherever possible in this regard.
