WE are proud to announce that Ashleigh Mason, who represented the U16 Umzinyathi hockey team as captain at the interprovincial tournament, has been selected for the U16 KZN Country and Districts team. Well done to the following pupils for making the U12 and U13 Umzinyathi hockey team:

U12 boys: Tim Gorzellok.

U13 girls: Mayenzi Maphanga, Kristen Steyn, Leah Tedder, Sarah Barber, Amoré van Rooyen, Keren Chiazzari and Bridget Dede (non-travelling reserve).

They will represent Umzinyathi at the interdistrict tournament on 14 and 15 May.

On Thursday 5 May, Grade 3 pupils travelled to the African Birds of Prey Sanctuary at Ashburton. We started off with a tour of the more than 40 birds’ cages, a firm favourite is always Hoot Hollow, which houses more than nine species of owl. Shannon, our guide, explained how fortunate we are in South Africa because we have an abundance of birds of prey (more than in both the Americas).
There are in fact 83 different kinds of raptors in southern Africa. Once we finished our tour and our snack, we were privileged to watch five different birds give us an aerial show that illustrated the feeding habits of eagles, kites, sparrow hawks and two different kinds of owls. This sanctuary is short of funds and we would encourage anyone who is looking for a pleasant family excursion, just outside Pietermaritzburg, to consider visiting it.
Our thanks to Mrs Delia Dreyer, who accompanied us and helped with the transport of the children.
