THE Afro andamp; Hair Twist Comb is the brainchild of Alex Dube, a local author now turned innovator.

Dube is a qualified civil engineer registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa, who has always had a passion for engineering and innovation. He graduated from engineering school and worked as a project manager and designer for a water utility company for four years. In 1995 he set up a multi-disciplinary consulting engineering company. At the same time he entered the real estate industry by initially acquiring downtown residential properties in Pietermaritzburg where he added value to these newly acquired assets by renovating and subdividing them. As his property portfolio grew, he stopped working as an engineer to focus on real estate. Today he has grown his portfolio and has since diversified geographically and in his tenant base to include office and retail. Dube is now using the wealth he acquired in property to pursue his passion in design and innovation. The innovation of the Afro andamp; Twist Comb came about when Dube saw his wife, Natascha, day in and day out using a tennis racket to create twists on her head. The tennis rackets being cumbersome and large, she kept one in the bedroom, one in each car and another one at the office so she could maintain her hair twists. He said his wife now uses the Afro andamp; Twist Comb for Afro-combing her hair as well as twisting it. She finds it easy to use and portable enough to slip into her handbag.
