LUNGILE Nhlanhla (25) said growing up in a loving and hard-working family encouraged her to fulfill her passion to become a chef. “I was born in Durban, and lived in Westville for most of my life. I now live with my family in Alverstone Assagay near Hillcrest. “I am the youngest of four, with two loving and hard-working parents. Coming from a big family and spending time together has been very important as they have been a strong support structure for me from a young age.

“I have always felt that no one could support and push me the way my family have, all the way from school plays until my MasterChef journey.”

Nhlanhla believes that food brings happiness and gathers people together. “From a young age I have had an interest in cooking. I used to run a ‘restaurant’ for my family from the dining room and would host my own formal dinners. I love the idea of bringing people together through food.”

The most exciting time of her life was being a contestant in MasterChef 2011. “I entered the first season of Masterchef in 2011. I was 21 at the time and did it out of sheer love after watching the international MasterChef. I made it to the top five, being the youngest left at the time. It was such a great learning experience and opened many doors for me, which only served to confirm my love for food and cooking.”

Lungile opened a business in Hillcrest - Lungiand#039;s Corner - which caters for clients all over Durban, including Pinetown. “I started Lungi’s Corner where I do food media and private chef work. I am the brand ambassador for Olive Pride and have just started studying towards a Bachelor of Consumer Science, majoring in food nutrition.”

Besides cooking, Nhlanhla enjoys outdoor activities. “I love outdoor activities like cycling on the Durban promenade and just enjoying the company of good friends. “To the youth I say, ‘never allow someone to tell you that you cannot do something’ and always have a plan of action.”
