UPPER Highway dad Mark Milne is no stranger to the acting world.

As a child he auditioned for lead roles in school plays. Some 15 years later he is reliving his childhood passion with his role in Shrek the Musical, currently on at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre.

Speaking to the Fever the 43-year-old said he was introduced to acting by his mother.

“My mother studied under Elizabeth Sneddon so I have always been exposed to the arts and had a love for it. I was involved in various productions as a child at school and church.

“My first professional production was an anti-drug play for schools. When I moved to the UK, I was asked to play a part in a re-enactment of the Chester Mystery Cycle. It was during this production that I first saw my future wife in the audience.

“It was theatre-in-the-round with three stages, so I made a point of interacting with her,” he reminisced.

Being a full-time business consultant, father and husband Milne said that acting had slowly taken a back seat, until now.

“When I was approached for a role in Shrek the musical, I could not turn this opportunity down. I am currently playing the role of Papa Bear and Thelonius in Shrek at the Sneddon.

“It is a Kickstart production. It has been hard work but I am having a ball. I am working with some amazing people.” Milne encourages the community to watch the show.

“It is a barrel of laughs and has something for everyone. The beauty about the script is that is very cleverly written, so there is something in it for all ages. What Steven and Greg have achieved in terms of the production is phenomenal. You will not be disappointed.”

His message to the youth is: “Don’t let computer animation rule your world. Take the time to experience live theatre. Never knock something till you try it. And bring a friend.”

To see Milne in action, Shrek the Musical is playing at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from 23 May until 28 June. Booking is now open at Computicket.
