HILLCREST couple Clive and Sandra Channell celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on 29 January and they claim that the secret to a long marriage, is to “enjoy life, laugh a lot and to always be there for each other in both difficult and good times”.

The couple met in 1963 and were married in 1966 in All Saints Church, Bellair. They were both involved in this Parish, having taught Sunday school and were part of the youth group.

They settled in Brighton Beach, where they brought up their family of three, Brett, Colette and Lisa. The children all attended schools in the area, where both parents were active on school committees.

Clive worked for various companies, Durban Electricity department, Mobil, Valvoline and the Midas Group, from where he retired. Sandra was employed by Unilever where she retired after working over 40 years in the accounts division.

Both Clive and Sandra enjoyed keeping fit and ran the Comrades Marathon, with Clive also completing a number of Midmar swims as well. During their running years they were part of the group that started the Harlequins Running Club on the Bluff.

Another of their activities was being part of the mime group, The Supremes who put on shows to raise funds for various charities and schools.

Their three children are now married and they have four grandchildren. Brett lives with his wife, Dee in Gauteng and two teenage sons, while both Colette and Lisa live in California with their husbands, Cliff and Jeff. Lisa and Jeff have a daughter and son.

Since retiring Clive and Sandra moved to Hillcrest, where they enjoy gardening, walking and visiting the Drakensberg for mini holidays.

Their love of travel has seen them visit many places, some of their favorites being Edinburgh, London, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Vancouver.

To celebrate their 50th anniversary, they spent three months in California visiting their daughters and families.

Their daughter Colette surprised them with a special treat for this big occasion - a week’s holiday on an island in the Bahamas. The family was accommodated in a beautiful home, with private beach where they had an enormous amount of fun.

The duo both thanked their family for the beautiful surprise and hoped for many more years together.

We have been taught that we need three meals a day in order to make it through the day and while most of us indulge in more than our fair share there is a large portion of South Africans who are living off barely enough to sustain them.
