Advertorial Enforce- protecting you

2016-01-19 06:00

A NEW year has begun, and along with countless resolutions, many people take the “fresh start” opportunity to re-evaluate and refinance some of life’s necessities, including insurance policies, debt, and other obligations.

One aspect that people do not routinely assess, however, are their security costs, generally accepting the level of service they receive as well as routine price increases. But with additional competition in the security industry and the ever-evolving capabilities of criminals, experts advise that businesses and home owners take more charge over this important aspect of their lives by ensuring that their security measures are up to date and that they are not paying exorbitant monthly fees.

Derek Lategan, managing director of Enforce Security suggests that businesses and home-owners consider the following:

Why do you want home security and the services of an armed response company?

If this reason is specifically for insurance purposes and you are not necessarily concerned with other consequences of being burgled or robbed, then rather opt for the cheapest security company with all of the necessary accreditations. This is integral to satisfy all stipulations of your insurance policy contracts.

If your reasons are to ensure the safety of yourself and your family, and to mitigate your risks of property loss, then carefully consider the various companies on offer. Having an alarm system does not mean your home will not be broken into, and contrary to popular belief, reaction time is not the ultimate consideration as most top companies are very similar in their responses. In most cases the sound of the alarm siren either scares criminals off before they commit their crimes, or they escape with your property before armed reaction arrives.

In addition to the legal accreditations, the additional considerations you should make, however, boil down to the following:

• Guarantees

• Follow-up investigations

• Local area knowledge

• Training of armed reaction officers

Guarantees:

What guarantee is your security provider prepared to offer? Talk is cheap and sales personnel have been known to make empty promises just to seal the deal. Does your security company put its money where its mouth is?

Follow-up investigations:

Once a crime has been committed, it is integral that your security company is able to do more than merely hand the case over to SAPS.

Having the necessary experts to investigate the cases as well as track down and arrest suspects is highly recommended to stop crime at its source. Security companies which are able to go further than just respond to alarm activations but also analyse and evaluate trends and statistics in order to help you take the necessary precautions are advised.

Local area knowledge:

Before choosing your security company find out where its control room is situated. It is advised to opt for a company with local knowledge of your region as, in the case of an emergency, the control room operator needs to accurately relay your location to the reaction officer. Having a company with reaction officers based in, or at least with excellent knowledge of, your suburb is also recommended so that they can get to you as quickly as possible, without having to look up directions.

Training of armed reaction officers:

The officers of most, if not all, reputable security companies undergo some level of basic security training in order to qualify them for the job.

But you need to enquire as to how often refresher courses are conducted and what additional training the officers have. If an officer was trained more than a decade ago, does that mean he is still adequately equipped to deal with any situation? If you or your family are being held up in your home by criminals, will the officer dispatched to your home know how to handle that situation? If criminals open fire on him how will he respond? Will he know how to handle his own firearm efficiently?

All these points are essential considerations and you are advised to thoroughly query the training given to the officers of your potential security companies. Regular and up-to-date firearm and hostage training is advised, as well as training on how to react while under fire.
