THE 2017 Compass Cares ‘Cats of Durban’ calendar was the first calendar produced in support of this KwaZulu-Natal based NPO which was established by Niki Moore two years ago. The A3 calendar features gorgeous photos of stray, feral and previously abandoned cats.

All photos, as well as the design, was done by Brendan Bromfield, a local photographer well known for his wildlife images. The production of the calendar would not have been possible without the support of the generous sponsors, such as AutoStop, Bruniquel & Associates, Fleetquip, Durban Data Forms, and Land Survey Africa.

Compass Cares is a voluntary organisation started by Compass Medical Waste Services with the aim of providing support to orphaned and injured wild and domestic animals as well as taking care of people in need.

“The organisation was born out of the Compass staff wanting to play a role in supporting animals as well as the impoverished and, in turn, showing gratitude for all that we have,’’ explains Claude Moodley, financial manager of Compass and volunteer member of Compass Cares.

“At Compass we practice an ethos of grace, gratitude and generosity and running projects like the calendar campaigns in support of Cats of Durban and CROW is our way of being a voice for the voiceless and making a difference in the lives of these neglected, and often abused, animals,’’ concludes Moodley.

The purpose of Cats of Durban is to sterilise stray and feral cats. According to Niki Moore of Cats of Durban, the work that they do, is not only because they love cats.

“An unwanted cat or kitten is extremely vulnerable to abuse, and this is what we try to prevent by bringing down the numbers of unwanted cats and kittens, and making sure that the cats we sterilise are looked after and fed,’’ explains Niki. “Cats can be extremely useful to society if they are looked after, as they are natural vermin killers, but an unwanted cat has a very hard life.’’

It costs R500 to sterilise one cat, which prevents 2 000 unwanted kittens being born within four years and two million unwanted kittens in an eight year period. Due to the incredible support of corporates, the calendar campaign raised a total of R96 000 which will allow Cats of Durban to sterilisation 180 cats.
