THIS year the Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association celebrates 10 years of beautifying the leafy suburb and maintaining the area every day.

Chairperson Marge Mitchell said the non-profit organisation started 10 years ago in June. “It started as a small committee of five people, who had answered an appeal in the local paper asking for anyone interested in starting an association to ‘beautify’ the area.

“Four of those original five remain 10 years later. The committee now has 10 dedicated members who give of their time voluntarily and give in kind as well.”

She said that the objectives of the association are simple - recycle, reduce litter and beautify. The portfolios of the members include graffiti removal, beautifying the area, which includes maintaining the verges in a section of Old Main Road, Hospital Road, and a section of Inanda Road on either side of the rail bridge, and caring for a small park in Elizabeth Road by planting trees and removing invasive alien plants, and managing the recycling centre in Delamore Road.

A newsletter is produced monthly and the association can be followed on its website and Facebook.

Five previously unemployed people are in the employ of the association and many readers will have seen them hard at work in Old Main Road and at the recycling centre.

“We are indebted to our regular sponsors and would not remain viable without their contribution. We have 200 members who pay an annual membership subscription of R50 and we thank them for their support.” Anyone wishing to contribute can contact Mitchell on 083 419 3807.
