Despicable scam of the elderly

2015-11-24 06:00

HOW heartless can people be to remove money fraudulently from pensioners and other holders of social grants?

This is done under cover of “air time” or “electricity payments” which the grant holder did not ask for. I was ignorant of this despicable operation until this morning, when a pensioner asked us why R100 has been taken off her pension for air time she did not want and did not even get. There is no indication which service provider the air time is for.

I went onto the Internet to find out if others had experienced the same. Black Sash has identified this scam and victims can take action by reporting it to their Sassa office or better still, directly to the Cash Payment Service (CPS) Provider for Sassa at 0800 600 160 and get the deductions blocked.

One can also ask for the amount to be refunded.

We have been taught that we need three meals a day in order to make it through the day and while most of us indulge in more than our fair share there is a large portion of South Africans who are living off barely enough to sustain them.
