PINETOWN SAPS detective Warrant Officer Wiseman Hlela, who works under the Pinetown Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, was awarded a certificate of appreciation by insurance company, Legal Hero.

This comes after he solved a rape case that occurred in Inchanga in 2014.

Pinetown SAPS communication officer Warrant Officer BJ Manqele said: “Warrant Officer Hlela solved a case that took place on 19 April 2014, when an 18-year-old victim was walking with her boyfriend in Inchanga when they were accosted by three suspects who then ordered the boyfriend to sit and watch while they took turns to rape her.”

The victim was raped seven times and a case of rape was opened at Inchanga police station for further investigation and two of the suspects were arrested.

During the rape incident the victim’s cellphone was taken by one suspect. A docket was then transferred to Pinetown Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit and Detective Warrant Officer Hlela was assigned to continue with investigation.

“Two suspects appeared in court and were denied bail.

“The suspects made several appearances in court and were finally convicted and sentenced.

“On 30 October Sanele Ngcobo was sentenced to five life imprisonment and 12 months for cellphone theft.

“Sicebi Ndlovu was sentenced to seven life imprisonment.

“An application for leave to appeal was refused. Diligent work by the investigating officer is commended,” said Manqele.

The third suspect was still at large at the time of going to press
