Dog poisoning on the increase

2017-08-08 06:01

PET owners in the Upper Highway area are on high alert after many dogs in the area have been poisoned.

According to Steven King of SA Community Crime Watch, many of the cases that have been reported to their organisation have been linked to house break-ins and robberies.

He said there have been three cases in the past two months - the latest incident occurred in Botha’s Hill where three dogs were victims to organophosphate poisoning. This is when toxic levels of carbamate insecticides like methomyl and carbofuran can cause seizures and respiratory arrest in the dog.

“From experience criminals are poisoning dogs normally as a prelude to a break-in at a property in that road or the property itself. It’s traumatic to the owners to see their animals killed this way.”

King appeals to the community to be aware of those lurking around their property and also warned pet owners to keep a close eye on their dogs.

“If your dog is experiencing any symptoms of poisoning, make sure you rush them immediately to the vet,” he added.
