Language unites

2017-02-28 06:00

ONE of the immediate ways to start realising the social cohesion that we all yearn for is through language.

In KZN by far, Zulu is the dominant language. Any language is a form of communication between people and it facilitates understanding and harmony.

In KZN, wouldn’t it contribute towards racial harmony and cohesion if a conscious effort was made to ensure that every person learns Zulu as an effort towards reconciliation and understanding between different races?

I’m not talking here about fanakalo.

Programmes, part-time or full-time, could be initiated by NGOs and even by the government to encourage South Africans to see language as one of the immediate avenues to pursue to promote racial harmony while we, of course, await fundamental structural changes to socioeconomic imba- lances.

No one, even in his or her grave, will benefit or enjoy seeing racial mayhem because of the current face of poverty - the black people generally, and the face of opulence - whites and a sprinkling of black faces.

It’s an unsustainable scenario.

We can as individuals and as a collective shape the kind of future we all yearn for across all divides.
