THE Seiwakai Karate Club has been teaching traditional Goju­ Ryu karate at the Hillcrest dojo for the past 20 years under the guidance of Sensei Ben Maré.

Maré has 43 years’ experience and is the highest graded JKF Goju Kai instructor in South Africa.
He holds a 7th Dan black belt in Seiwakai­ and is a board examiner in both JKF Goju Kai and Seiwakai International.

Maré is the president of KZN Karate­, a post he has been selected to hold for two terms.
He also sits on the national
Executive board of Karate South
Africa.

Maré is responsible for heading the Dan regulations of the national board and recently managed the children’s Protea karate team, which represented­ South Africa in Croatia.

Seiwakai is also a competitive club with students competing at regional, national and world events.

Two students were recently selected to represent South Africa at the World Goju Ryu Championships to be held in Romania in 2017.

The club caters for adults and children, with children training from the age of three and a half.

The dojo is open from 4pm, Mondays and Wednesdays, and 3.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Children’s classes run from Monday to Thursday and adults train on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Karate focuses on teaching student discipline, respect and leadership.

Karate techniques help children and adults with fitness, enhanced reflex reactions, balance, co-ordination, increased focus, concentration skills and self-confidence.
