PAT Dammann has been a regular presence on the 18km trail run women’s podium of the STIHL Sharks Trail Adventure since the event’s debut in 2012 and the Hillcrest local has confirmed she will once again return to Summerveld Estate, Shongweni for the 2015 event on Sunday, 6 December.

With two thirds (2012 and 2014) and a second place (2013) at the event to her name already, many would assume Dammann to have an eager eye on a top-of-the-podium performance this year.

The Team Vitality competitor is however eager to soak up the unique atmosphere of the event once more as she looks to get into the festive spirit and ease into the end of year holidays.

“I love trail running but I just run for fun so if I manage to win the 18km race this year then it happens, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t,” explained a relaxed Dammann.

“A couple of years ago there weren't too many trail events around, especially not in our area and so I first took part in the Sharks Trail Adventure mainly because it was so close to home.

“It has been such a great event right from the first year though that every year I make sure I don’t miss it!” she added.

The STIHL Sharks Trail Adventure is a family affair for the Dammanns with Pat’s husband, Martin, as well as their children opting to tackle the various mountain biking races also on offer on the day while Pat tackles the trails by foot.

“My kids enjoy their trail running too but 9km is a little bit far for them at this stage so they hop on their bikes and take part in the event that way before we enjoy some time together as a family at the event afterwards.”

Despite being a regular runner who has completed a few Comrades Marathons and two Two Oceans Marathons previously, Dammann believes the event is manageable for most.

“Compared to some other, more technical events that I’ve done, the Sharks Trail Adventure route is fairly easy.

“There is only a little bit of a climb and is not very technical at all; you barely even get your shoes wet at the river crossing!

“Anyone with a reasonable fitness should cope very comfortably while the scenery of the route still makes it a great run for all,” said Dammann.
