MISS Deaf South Africa (MDSA), a non-for-profit organisation dedicated to enhancing the lives of people living without the ability to hear, held its first annual fund-raising Masquerade Ball on Saturday, 17 September at the Kloof Country Club.

The event boasted an auction, fashion show and after-party, that raised almost R28 000 for the Decibel Cochlear Campaign.

Emanuel Pietersen was the compere and Janie Erasmus, Miss Deaf SA 2016 and Miss Deaf World 2016, was guest speaker as was Dr K. Schlemmer.

The Highway Men entertained and later there was a fashion show featuring pieces by Kat Shoesmith and modelled by Simply Models girls.

Schlemmer also spoke about cochlear implants while Erasmus, Leviena Smit and Chris Smit explained what MDSA stands for.

Smit led a live auction of travel, beauty, home and fashion items, including packages donated by more than 40 sponsors, including MSC Cruises, Ardmore Guesthouse, Afriski, to name some.

For more information about future MDSA events in KZN, to volunteer or make a donation, visit or call Sonel Steyn on 074 889 4715.
