SOUTH Africa’s Mr Music, Richard Cock, will be sharing the stage with Cape Town soprano, Beverley Chiat and pianist, Christopher Duigan, at a special Christmas concert.

Music-lovers can look forward to an evening of readings, carols and seasonal music at St Agnes Church in Kloof at 7.30pm on Wednesday 21 December.

Cock will entertain the audience with his humorous selections of seasonal stories, readings and anecdotes and Chiat will sing some popular Christmas songs. Together they will lead the audiences in the singing of carols with Duigan at the piano.

Chiat is a coloratura soprano, who has sung the roles of the Queen of the Night (Mozart), Serpetta (Mozart), Oscar (Verdi), Gilda (Verdi), Adele (J Strauss), Susanna (Mozart), Valencienne (Lehar), Lucy (Menotti), Frasquita and Micaela (Bizet) among others.

Her oratoria repertoire includes: Mozart’s Requiem, his Masses in C Major and D Minor, Handel’s Messiah, Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Choral Fantasy and Pastoral Mass.

Cock has made a significant contribution to music in South Africa since returning in 1980 from an eight year sojourn in the United Kingdom.

During those years he studied at the Royal School of Church Music and then gained experience in church music and education ending his days abroad as assistant organist and director of music at the Cathedral Choir School in Chichester.

Since returning to SA he has been an SABC producer, director of music at St Mary’s Cathedral, director of the Chanticleer Singers and Symphony Choir of Johannesburg, and a conductor of note.

He is equally at home making music with children in a classroom and with leading soloists in the concert hall; and has worked with, amongst others, Julian Lloyd-Webber, Joshua Bell, Lesley Garrett and Patricio Buanne. He also worked closely with Luciano Pavarotti and the 3 Tenors on their South African tour.

Duigan is widely regarded as one of SA’s leading concert pianists and has performed extensively with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic, Cape Philharmonic and Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestras.

He is also the founder of the Music Revival concert series, and is the mastermind behind the classic music at the Hilton Arts Festival, the Franschhoek Classic Music Festival and a series of performances by the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic.

Tickets are R150, which includes refreshments. Booking for the Kloof event can be done through the church at 031 764 2037 or via email at - Supplied
