THE Waterfall College Hope Outreach group is completing a reading project at iThemba Academy, which has brought enjoyment and learning for both young and old pupils, and delight to the teachers involved.

The programme started in early May, running every morning on Monday to Friday from 7am to 7.30am. Teacher in charge of the group, Jayne Cansfield, allocated the 30 volunteers from Waterfall College Grade 8-12 into groups with group leaders. They follow a set weekly schedule to take turns reading to the iThemba Academy children, specifically to those who would arrive early at school and those who were weaker with their reading. The reading is done using books used by iThemba Academy in class to ensure that the children are familiar with the vocabulary and the story.

The programme is coming to an end as the pupils ready themselves for June examination.
Cansfield said: “The feedback that I received from the Waterfall College pupils was that the children enjoyed reading a page or two and then handing the book to our senior pupils saying, ‘Your turn now’. So sweet. Our pupils were thoroughly impressed with the quality and reading ability of these little ones.”
