THE Pinetown German Shepherd Dog and All Breeds Training Club has been in existence for more than 50 years.
According to secretary Norma Childs, the concept of a German Shepherd club in Pinetown originated in the 1950s. It is now known as the Pinetown German Shepherd Dog and All Breeds Training Club.
A group of Alsatian (German Shepherd) owners met regularly to train their dogs, but felt that the Natal German Shepherd Dog Club was too far away and they had been approached by other people to join them.

“In 1961 The Pinetown Breeders and Trainers Association was formed. Then in 1962 the first annual general meeting was held and it was decided to change the name of the club to Pinetown Alsatian and Breeding Club. It was also agreed that people owning other breeds of dog would be admitted for training, but they would be non-voting members. At the end of the year, the club became affiliated to the Kennel Union of South Africa.

“We take all breeds of dogs - training is done by positive reinforcement making the process pleasurable for handler and dog. We offer specialised training for vaccinated puppies from nine weeks. Domestic and competitive obedience is offered to older dogs.”

Recently the club started classes in Dog Carting.
“Two shows are held annually, one in March and the other in July. Dogs compete in Obedience and Carting. In addition the club holds Canine Good Citizen Tests, these tests are not competitive, but rather an assessment of the dog and handler. Puppies are tested in a puppy foundation assessment before promotion to the next level. The club trains on a secure field and members can enjoy refreshments at a clubhouse.

“With the club being around for over 50 years we look forward to the future with confidence. During the course of a club year, in excess of 100 dogs and handlers come to classes.”
