AFTER a class visit to the Valley of 1000 Hills Community Centre, Hillcrest Primary pupil, Liam Jansen Van Rensburg, in the Grade 5 Learner Extension and Acceleration Programme (Leap), saw a need for the children in the community to receive proper toothbrushes and toothpaste, so he started a collection campaign at school.

Initially, he approached Dis-Chem and asked them for sponsorship and they got the ball rolling by donating 50 toothbrushes and toothpaste sets.

Liam spent his holidays designing and making posters for what was soon to become the “Pearls Campaign”.

Liam then set about inspiring his fellow Grade 5 Leap classmates to climb on the band wagon and an appeal was sent out to the school community to support the campaign. Children, teachers and parents responded in kind and soon new toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes were streaming into the Grade 5 Leap class.

Liam then hit his target of 220, and delivered the parcels to eager recipients at the Valley of 1000 Hills Outreach programme. - Supplied.
