CASSIDY Whiteford, a Grade 9 pupil at St Mary’s school, won the KZN Dancer Centre RAD Advance Foundation Bursary of 2015.

Teacher Bonnie de Beer of the centre said she is extremely proud of Whiteford’s achievements and this is an example what the KZN Dancer Centre was destined to do “produce and promote talented dancers”.

She said that her sister Kim and herself have taken on many of life’s milestones together and today they own one of the largest dance studios in KwaZulu-Natal.

The sisters have three studio venues and four school venues around Durban with 10 highly motivated and qualified teachers and associate teachers on their teaching faculty.

Many of their students have excelled with international dance accolades and the sisters have also jetted off to New York with their dancers for a dance experience tour.

Speaking to the Hillcrest Fever about their recent achievements and the dance studio, the duo said that dance is in their blood. “Our mother introduced us to dance from the time we were born and we never looked back since,” said Bonnie.

“We want to take the youth off the streets and get them involved in a sport.”
The school offers classes in modern, tap, ballet, hip hop and even zumba.
“We aim to use our skills to pass on to those that are interested in learning,” said Bonnie.
“Every two years we take selected pupils and teachers to experience dance in New York (NY). We have our pupils compete in tournaments, and enable them to get a whole new meaning to 'Broadway'.”

Bonnie said that with the school they also get the pupils involved in charity work and helping out those less fortunate then themselves.

She added that they do not only focus on dance training, but teach pupils how to become better individuals in their community.

They also urged the youth of today to get involved in the sport of dance.
“If you have a passion for dance, music or sport, follow your dreams and give it 100 percent,” said Bonnie.
“Hard-work, determination and perseverance will always pay off in the end.”
