A HOUSE robber is lucky to be alive after trying to escape down a hill in Kloof last week.

According to bystanders and police, the man attempted to escape by riding a bicycle down a steep hill while clutching a TV. At the bottom of the hill was a 25-metre cliff and the man was unable to stop.

Netcare 911’s Chris Botha said that paramedics arrived at the scene and noticed the man lying on his back at the bottom of the cliff with the TV and bicycle close to where he was lying.

“Medics and police search and rescue used ropes to abseil down the cliff with their equipment to stabilise the injured man,” he said.

“After the patient was sedated and placed on a ventilator, medics had to immobilise him on a trauma board, then package him in a stokes basket to prepare for 15 Squadron to hoist them out from the mountain area.
“After the patient and rescue officer was hoisted into the Oryx, they flew to a nearby field where an ambulance crew was standing by.”

The patient was transported to a hospital in Durban under the care of an emergency care practitioner.
