Scout raft race well received

2017-04-11 06:01

THE 2017 Scout Raft Race at Midmar Dam was a big hit this year as it was open to the guides as well, with 1st Hillcrest Guides scooping podium position.

Guide leader Barbara Mercer said the raft race had new faces joining the event for the first time.

“The race is a great experience for the guides and scouts. The teams are encouraged to build the best raft and then paddle around a course on Midmar Dam for podium places. The course is 100m in length and rafts need to have a flag attached to them - the minimum amount of people on the raft is six,” she said.

“Our guides did tremendously well with hard work and determination, not forgetting their team spirit they were placed first.”

Mercer encouraged girls in the community to join the guides. “We have different groups for different age groups. Brownies cater for girls from age 7-10, Guides for girls from 10-14 and Ranger Guides for girls from 14-18. There is also a section for the “littlies”, Teddies from five to seven years.

“The different programmes aim at empowering girls and women to reach their full potential. The programme covers topics such as leadership, community service, the environment, outdoor activities e.g. camping, swimming and hiking, guide knowledge, first aid, pioneering and craft,” she added.
