THE Kloof and Highway SPCA surprised Elaine Cairns, one of the SPCA’s exceptional volunteers, with her new vehicle – a Nissan NP200 - generously donated by an anonymous donor last week.

Just before Christmas Cairns’ vehicle was stolen, this would have crippled her work as she does not have funds to replace it.

Lisa Gadd, SPCA outreach officer, said: “We were in a position to loan her one of our inspectorate vehicles as one of our inspectors was on leave, however, the inspector was due back and it was feared that Elaine would once again be without a vehicle and therefore unable to continue her voluntary work in animal welfare.”

“In January the Kloof and Highway SPCA appealed to our community on behalf of Elaine, for anyone who was able to assist in acquiring a vehicle for her so that the dedicated 80-year-old volunteer and her assistant, Doctor Mthombeni, could continue their critical work in animal welfare.”

The resident with a heart of gold voluntarily works in the Molweni area assisting the Kloof and Highway SPCA, where she is well known by locals, and countless animals rely on her help.

Every day she travels to Molweni to collect animals that are unwanted by their owners, animals requiring sterilisation and various other treatments, and brings them to the Kloof and Highway SPCA.

Doctor Mthombeni works with Cairns acting as a translator, ensuring her safety, assisting her and being a future SPCA inspector in training.
The duo are a regular sight in the Molweni community and reach out to the most vulnerable animals and assist in providing primary animal health care.

Cairns, Mthombeni and staff at the Kloof and Highway SPCA were overwhelmed when they received the gift of the new vehicle.

“It was so humbling to see the gratitude and appreciation on Elaine’s face when the vehicle was unveiled.
“The committee, staff, volunteers and animals we take care of would like to say a very special and heartfelt thank you to the generous person for donating the funds to purchase this new vehicle for Elaine to use - without your generosity this dream would not have been possible,” said Gadd.
