ELAINE Cairns is one of the dedicated volunteers that the Kloof and Highway SPCA has the privilege of being supported by.
At the age of 80 she works tirelessly, day in and day out, devoting every minute of her day to the prevention of cruelty to animals.

Elaine is often asked how she manages to do this voluntary work and if she is able to sleep at night after seeing some of the horrific cases she has dealt with. Her reply is, if she does not do this work then she will not be able to sleep.
Elaine knows the desperate and vast need of underprivileged animals and feels compelled to help as long as she is able to.

She voluntarily works in the Molweni area assisting the Kloof and Highway SPCA, where she is well known by the locals, and the animals rely on her help. Every day she travels to Molweni to collect animals that are unwanted by their owners, animals that need sterilisation and various other treatments, and brings them to the Kloof and Highway SPCA.

Doctor Mthombeni works with Elaine as a translator, ensuring her safety, assisting with her volunteer work, and being a future SPCA inspector in training - the duo are a regular sight in the Molweni community.

However, just before Christmas Elaine’s vehicle was stolen. This would ordinarily have crippled her work as she does not have the funds to replace it, however, the SPCA was in a position to loan her one of the inspectorate vehicles because one of the inspectors was on leave. However the inspector is due back and Elaine will again be without a vehicle and therefore unable to continue her voluntary work in animal welfare.

The SPCA and Elaine therefore ask if anyone is able to help in any way with a vehicle, or donate funds towards buying a vehicle to enable her to continue her significant work in animal welfare in the Molweni community, to come forward.

Lisa Gadd of the SPCA said: “As a level 3 contributor – our supporters can claim BEE procurement of 110% for every R100 donated,” she said.
“Any support to assist Elaine with a vehicle will be greatly appreciated. For more information, contact Sarah van Heerden on 031 764 1212 or emailoperations@kloofspca.co.za
