Start by regulating ANC fake news

2017-03-21 06:02

SO Minister of State Security David Mahlobo wants to regulate the Internet because he doesn’t want us to read fake news, and because we are “under siege” by a foreign force?

Can he start by regulating the fake news his own government is propagating?

We are tired of all the lies we are constantly told about the Guptas, Nkandla and the president’s purported commitment to rooting out corruption while we read daily accounts of millions being squandered with impunity by his government colleagues.

In any event, we choose to read what we wish, whether it be fake or genuine. Democratic freedom entitles us to free choice.

We have capacity to reason and make decisions, even unwise decisions.

It is not a politician’s place to interfere in my unwise decision to read fake news, if it pleases me.

As for being under siege, can he share the evidence with us, please?

As an enlightened society our laws must be informed by evidence, not paranoid delusions.

Mahlobo and those backing him have very short memories.

The apartheid state censored all information in a primitive age and still got outwitted by Mahlobo’s party.

How effective then can his censorship be in a modern age with a far more enlightened techno-savvy citizenry?

Their desperate attempts to cling on to power is now turning once-smart respectable people like him and his president into political buffoons.
