Stats SA data survey goes digital

2016-04-26 06:00

STATISTICS South Africa is conducting a community survey across the country involving surveyors going door-to-door to gather information.

More than 11 000 contract fieldworkers have set out across the country to collect data from 1,3 million homes.

Stats SA said on their website that they had moved away from the traditional method of data collection using static maps and paper questionnaires to the Computer Assisted Personal Interview (Capi) methodology.

The website said fieldworkers will now use Tablets to capture information on a digital questionnaire.

Field staff will carry official ID cards, which include a hologram image to verify their authenticity and must be produced when visiting homes.

Households will be asked questions on age, sex, migration, access to water, sanitation and housing, ownership of goods and involvement in agricultural activities.

The site said the census was an information plan to help improve quality of life and monitor progress.

Stats SA call centre operator Tozama Mzunge said citizens should not be alarmed when their agents come to their door asking for personal information, about work, the number of people in the house, and so on.

“If people are unsure whether they are from Stats SA, they can ask for the person’s name or ID and phone the call centre to confirm they are with us,” she said.
