Waterfall crime dampens festive cheer

CRIME in Waterfall continues to increase despite efforts by police, neighborhood watches and residents to eradicate it from the area.

The latest incident occurred last week at Everwood Estate in Waterfall 2. Hillcrest SAPS CPF public relations officer Steven King said that a resident heard a noise and went to investigate.

“The resident was accosted by two men who [entered his lounge] and forced him to his bedroom.

“The men ordered the resident and his wife to lie down and asked the daughter to sit on the floor.”

The men rummaged through their belongings and took three cellphones, a handbag, wallet, two purses, laptop bag and backpack.

“The men were armed with a knife and threatened to kill the family if they didn’t co-operate. They kept asking for gold and firearms.”

When the men moved to ransack the daughter’s room the resident shut the door and they started screaming.

“The men ran to the lounge and kicked out a window to escape over the electric fence. The bags and purses were recovered in the bushes,” King added.

SAPS, Secure link, Care Line Crises Centre and SA Community Crime Watch attended the incident. The men are still at large and police are investigating.

King urged anyone with information to contact Hillcrest SAPS on 031 765 9116.
