THE Cris Hani Informal Settlement at Jeffreys Bay had good reason to celebrate on Thursday, May 28 when the electricity to 51 households was officially switched on.

Residents gathered singing and dancing in the street to celebrate the special occasion.

“This is a wonderful day,” said resident Papa Bolo. “We have been struggling for a long time without electricity. This is going to make a big difference in our lives.”

The electrification of Chris Hani is the latest milestone to be achieved by Kouga Municipality in its drive to improve the lives of residents living in informal settlements.

“The community and I wish to thank Kouga’s electricity department and all other roleplayers for taking the plight of Chris Hani’s people seriously and bringing power to the area,” said ward councillor Timothy Meleni.

Infrastructure, Planning and Development Portfolio Councillor Patrick Kota said the municipality would also be improving the water supply, sanitation and roads at the settlement in the new financial year
