AFTER his controversial and sudden resignation earlier this year, former Victory Christian School principal Fanie Vermaak is set to open his own school.

The independent school, to be named PHAROS - a synonym for the word ‘lighthouse’ - will open its doors at the start of the first school term of 2016 on January 13. The school will be situated in Woltemade Street in Jeffreys Bay.

Pharos will accommodate learners from Grade 00 to Grade 7 and will be a bilingual school providing education in Afrikaans and English. “We will establish a curriculum that stimulates a learner to think and reason intelligently, rather than memorising facts,” says Vermaak.

The current premises is only the first stepping stone, as Pharos will have its own school building in the future. According to Vermaak, some key personnel are already in place, while other vacancies will be advertised as student numbers increase.

“This new venture we are embarking on, is both scary and very exciting at the same time,” says Vermaak. “We are at peace that this is what God has in store for us in the next season of our lives.

“Since the early 1990s when I first star-ted as a teacher, it has been my passion to discover that one thing in every child that will make them passionate about education and excited to learn. Inside every child there is God-given passion, potential and purpose. Like Sokrates said: eduction is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.

“After 25 years in education, during which time I was mentored by the best in the profession and learned a lot from my mistakes, this burning desire has led me to start Pharos with my wife, Hanlie.”
