THE Kouga Wind Farm situated at Oyster Bay, invested close to R1 million in the community during the construction phase alone.

Investments in health, child care, food security, education, sport, transport and infrastructure all received a welcome and much-needed boost.

The internal and access roads to Oyster Bay have been upgraded at the request of the Umzamowethu community, and residents are provided with a transport service from Oyster Bay to the Humansdorp Clinic twice a week.

A waiting room and consulting facilities at the local clinic to the tune of R300 000 is nearing completion, while two soup kitchens in Pellsrus and one in Umzamawethu were equipped with pots, utensils and electricity and are supplied with vegetables and food supplies on an ongoing basis.

A play park was installed at the Sea Vista Sports field and maintenance was carried out on a Sea Vista crèche.

Sport related projects include the upgrading of the change rooms and ablution facilities at the Sea Vista Sports Field and the resurfacing of the netball courts. A security system was installed and a caretaker employed to oversee the facilities.

Nordex SA, part of the KWF team, donated a container to be used as an office for the caretaker.

The KWF Cricket Clinic - via the Dave Callaghan Cricket Academy - provides weekly coaching to Sea Vista and Umzamowethu children, while the annual Rotary Makro Golf Festival took place in March with the Kouga Wind Farm sponsoring four developments players, for the second year running.

“A positive impact on surrounding communities is key to the development of the Kouga Wind Farm. This involves building relationships to facilitate community participation and actively investing in these communities. The combined budget of the entire construction team enabled the projects to be more meaningful and impactful,” said Lukhanyo Ndube, CEO of the Kouga Wind Farm.

These community driven projects combine the support of the Kouga Wind Farm Project Company, Nordex South Africa, Power Group and Actom/VE Reticulation. Smhart Security and ALE Heavylift SA also donated their time and services.

.The Kouga Wind Farm consists of 32 turbines capable of generating up to 300 million KWh per year (300 GWh), enough to supply about 50 000 average households with electricity annually and mitigating over 290 000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually
