THE Kouga Express is all set to ‘reel in’ some cash at the third JBay Winterfest Fishing Skins Competition at the Kabeljauws Lagoon from 08:30 to 14:30 on July 11.

The competition will be fished on a “skins” system, with anglers competing for a R2 000 cash prize every hour of the competition. Any money won by Jan Olivier, who is representing the Kouga Express, will be donated to a charity in Jeffreys Bay.

This approach promises to make for an exciting day where any fish could be a potential prize-winner.

In addition to the R12 000 cash, there will be many other prizes and lucky draws such as the best catch for a junior (under 18), ladies and species draw.

This competition will be ‘fished’ on a catch and release basis in order to promote responsible angling, and there will be 15 weigh marshals on duty to record catches.

July can be a very productive month for angling in Jeffreys Bay, with some quality edible fish around. Depending on the conditions on the day, catches should include Mussel Cracker, Steenbras, Kob, Elf and Leerfish. Winter months are not the best time to target sharks and rays, but under the right conditions anglers could look at targeting Smoothounds, Spotties, Cowsharks and Spearnose Skates.

Entertainment on the day includes a bait and tackle clinic from 15:00 to 16:00 by Protea anglers and television personalities, kites, music, food stalls, a beer tent and a play area for the children.

Registration takes place from 06:30 to 08:00 at the Kabeljous parking lot on the day of the competition.

The fishing area will be from Dolphin Beach to the far side of the Kabeljous lagoon. The competition hours is from 08:30 to 14:30, with the prize-giving are at 16:30.

Officials will be available on the day at the Kabeljous grass parking area to assist all entrants before the competition starts.

The entry fee is R150 for men, R100 for ladies and R50 for children u.16. Tickets are available at all major tackle shop. For more information, contact Sonya at 078 087 2806 or send an email to sonyadoris@
