Rescue vessel increases NSRI’s horsepower

THE NSRI Station 37, Jeffreys Bay boasts a brand new bright red and yellow rescue vessel donated by a group of hard-working women from the Project Group based in Johannesburg.

The R160 000 vessel, a 4.2m inflatable boat to be used for inshore and inland rescues, was fittingly christened Project Group Rescuer at a ceremony on Saturday.

“It is wonderful to see the result of many requests for prizes and sponsorships come to fruition. We are delighted that this vessel will assist the NSRI in saving lives, it makes all the hard work worthwhile,”says Rosemary Renton from Project Group who has been involved with the NSRI for over 30 years.

According to Jeffreys Bay Station Commander, Rieghard Janse van Rensburg, the Project Group Rescuer replaced their existing 4.2m vessel, Loved1s24. “This vessel assisted with numerous rescues in her 12-year life at NSRI of which the last three years was at Station 37. Her last big rescue was in April, when she was used to rescue six people just outside of Loerie, who was cut-off by a river that burst its banks due to the massive rainfall the previous days,” says Janse van Rensburg.

Apart from the Project Group Rescuer, Station 37 is home to the Eddie Beaumont II - a 5.5 Rigid Inflatable Boat rated for day and night rescues - and the Discovery Rescue Runner 12 - a 3.6 custom built rescue craft for inshore and inland rescues in high-risk areas.

Janse van Rensburg says the biggest challenge faced by the local NSSRI is to get new trainees. “It takes a minimum of six months to get a new recruit qualified as a Sea Going Crew Member, who can assist with a rescue, and another 18 months to qualify such a person as a Coxswain.

“All we ask from potential trainees is commitment. We will teach them what they need to know.”
