THE new Rotary Recycle Swap Shop at God’s Acre in Tarragona Road, Sea Vista was officially opened on May 4 by ward councillor Ben Rheeder.

The Shop received a blessing from Honorary Rotarian Pastor Andrew Vena. The function was attended by a small group of Swap Shop volunteers and dignitaries.

The project which has been running for three years was formerly hosted at the Talhado Children’s Haven.

In welcoming the audience, St Francis Rotarian Lyn Aitken thanked Ward Councillor Rheeder for allocating the land at God’s Acre for the project. She also thanked the organiser’s of Billy’s Beach for their wonderful donation of R30 000, which enabled St Francis Rotarians to go ahead and purchase the Wendy house for the shop. Also thanked for their support were the Rainbow Nation Trust in Port Elizabeth for giving R10 000 towards the project and Len Terblanche, CEO of Schaeffler SA, for donating the proceeds of their annual golf day in December.

“Behind me is what we have spent your wonderful donations on,” said Aitken. “That little house and everything inside it, are funded by the generous folk around us and through endless fundraising by our Rotary Satellite Club in St Francis.”

Rheeder praised the Rotary Satellite Club St Francis for their efforts to improve the lives of Sea Vista residents through this Recycle Swap Shop project. This is an excellent example of what can be achieved when communities work together,” he says.

In closing Aitken thanked the Sea Vista community for their wholehearted support of the project.

“Aggie’s Soup Kitchen, Pastor Vena and the Shekinah Ministries, Mr Coenraad and the staff of Sea Vista Primary, the staff and teachers of the Talhado Children’s Haven, all the parents and children of Sea Vista who participate, and all the residents of St Francis who save their recycling to either support a child or to boost our funds for the shop, a very big thank you from St Francis Rotarians and the Swap Shop Volunteers,” says Aitken.

The Rotary Recycle Swap Shop opens for the children of Sea Vista on the first Thursday afternoon of each month, weather permitting
