THE South African National Blood Service (SANBS) recently held an award ceremony to honour those who had continuously sacrificed to help others.

The event was held at Mentors Country Estate last Wednesday.

“Honouring blood donors is a way of thanking them for their selfless act,” said SANBS Public Relations Practitioner Nina van Wyk.

“Every unit of blood donated, saves a life. We at SANBS thank each and every donor on behalf of our patients, who are able to celebrate yet another birthday.

“There is no factory producing blood, nor is there any substitute for blood - we solely rely on the goodwill of blood donors. We urge eligible blood donors to visit our branches and donate the gift of life.”

According to Van Wyk, about 20% of their blood stock comes from high school learners in the Eastern Cape. “The Humandorp Secondary School is one of the top five donors in South Africa, with High School Nico Malan on their heels.”
