Shark cage diving rumour holds no water

2015-07-30 06:00

KOUGA will not be home to shark cage diving.

This is according to the Department of Environmental Affairs.

In a statement released earlier this week, the Department states that they have noted with concern the false allegations about a pending permit application for a white shark cage diving operation in Jeffreys Bay, St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis.

“It is important to note that this region is not designated for white shark cage diving under the regulations relating to the management of this activity,” says Zolile Nqayi from the Department.

“Permits for white shark cage diving are allocated every five years from the date of the previous allocation. Thus, a fresh invitation for application for a permit only occurs every five years. Permits are allocated to any person who in response to an invitation placed in the Government Gazette, satisfies the criteria and objectives set out in the regulations and policy for the management of white shark cage diving.”

According to Nqayi, the current permits only expire in July 2016.

“To date the Department has not entertained any applications on an ad hoc basis. Allegations of the Department considering any applications and being in the process of allocating a permit in St Francis Bay or Jeffreys Bay are therefore false,” says Nqayi.
