THE Vintage Charity Shop in Jeffreys Street, Jeffreys Bay, houses a different breed of people. Animals are their passion, and their work comprises collecting and selling articles donated by the public – solely in aid of animal world.

The enterprise is under management of Humansdorp resident Louisa Bakkes. The shop was started by the SPCA management committee in Humansdorp four years ago. It resettled in Neptune Terrace and moved to the Jeffreys Street premises (formerly Smitties Electrical) a month ago.

This is not a swop shop, but a vintage charity shop which has so far held a highly successful fashion show, concentrating on fashions from the sixties and seventies.

Since the shop is an ongoing venture, funds are in continuous demand, and any animal lover who likes to put his money where his mouth is (and other members of the public) are welcome to donate articles for resale. Books and other stock are highly appreciated. Since money is needed for this highly unselfish service, articles are sold cheaply.

The SPCA is the only organization recognized and backed legally by the government. Since every SPCA branch is autonomous, it has to generate its own funds. The last donation they received from the municipality was in 2009. They have approached the board on many occasions since that time, but to no avail. They are planning to acce-lerate their efforts in this regard.

Other outreaches are available, such as inspectors who are available on a 24/7 basis, and eight kennels where animals are cared for when their owners are on holiday, or for some other acceptable reason. Fees are most reasonable. Schools are also visited to educate pupils regarding care, love for and understanding of animals.

Members of the public are kindly asked to donate articles of all sorts to the Vintage Charity Shop. The good Samaritans who will attend to you are Joy van Hemert (vice chairman of the local SPCA branch) and Suzanne Kruger, staunch supporter and member of the fund-raising committee. Chairman Arthur Eaton also visits regularly and is willing to educate the public regarding the importance of good animal care.

Contact details are:, the SPCA-number 042 2952184, emergency number 0731218963.
