Apiesdraai: a ticking time bomb

2016-08-04 06:00

TWO years after the R15 million-upgrade of the Apiesdraai Sewerage Pump Station on the road to Aston Bay, residents and motorists are still battling with raw sewage running down the street and into the nearby dam.

The upgrade of the pump station - which services Ocean View, Aston Bay and the Marina Martinique - saw the capacity of the pump station almost double, but there is still no end it sight of the constant sewage spills that are of grave concern to residents.

Residents describe the sewage situation as a ticking health time bomb.

According to Johannes van der Walt, who uses the road on a regular basis, raw sewage are lapping at residents’ doorsteps and the stench is overwhelming. “Also of concern is the safety of the children who play next to the street and that of the cattle drinking the spil-lage,” says Van der Walt.

Another disgruntled resident, Lucille Nieu-woudt, who has been living in Aston Bay for the past 28 years, says the problem has increased over the last three years.

“For the last year the problem is at its worst ever. The birdlife has been completely wiped out. Gone are the days when flamingos, ducks and white-fronted goose frequented the dam.

“I do not even want to talk about the unbearable stench . . . It is disgusting and an embarrassment to have visitors over.”

According to Kouga Municipal spokesperson, Laura-Leigh Randall, the problem is the gravity line to the pump station that are clogged on a regular basis, and not the pump station itself.

“’The blockages are usually caused by ‘foreign objects’ that are flushed down toilets or thrown in manholes - anything from fish heads and broken kitchenware to hair extensions and rags,”’ says Randall.

“’The municipality always try to unblock the pipeline as soon as possible, but sometimes it is necessary to bring in specialised equipment.”
