GOING to the beach should be a relaxing experience, right?

But how many times have you stepped out of your car, taken your towel, locked the car, come to the beach ready to get into the water, and bang! Your car keys and wallet. No one will take your towel, but your keys and wallet are a whole different story.

Local businessman, Shaun Aucamp, in partnership with the Kouga Municipality, has installed 96 light blue lockers – called LockIt - at the Main Beach in the vicinity of the Supertubes so beachgoers can safely store their belongings without the fear of it being stolen.

The key of the specific locker is attached to a strap users can secure around their wrist. This means beachgoers are free to swim, sunbathe, play volleyball, surf – or whatever else they might want to do – without having to keep an eye on their belongings.

“All residents and visitors have to do is pay R40 for a locker for the day and sign in with Ernst Bradey who will be on duty daily from 09:00, close the locker assigned to them and take the key with them. When they want to retrieve their belongings, they return the key to Bradey and sign out,” says Aucamp.

According to Aucamp, the lockers will be up for a trial period until the end of January. It they prove to be a success, it will become a permanent fixture at the beach.
