Community takes law into own hands

A man, thought to be involved in a burglary case, was severely assaulted by community members on Sunday, May 8.

According to police spokesperson Lt Gerda Swart, members of the Humansdorp Police Station received a complaint at approximately 17:00 that KwaNomzama-residents were assaulting a man. “Police members responded immediately and the injured man was admitted to hospital as no case had been opened against him,” says Swart.

According to Swart, disgruntled community members, mainly foreigners, gathered at the Humansdorp Police Station on Monday. “It was explained to them that, according to law, a case must be opened or a statement submitted before a person can be arrested on a specific charge. As no case was opened against the victim, he is not in police custody. The crowd then dispersed.”

According to Swart, a case of assault was opened.
