WHAT does Dirk Ellis Volkswagen and a Professional Golfers Association (PGA) player have in common?

The perfect caddie, of course.

Inspired by the beautiful golf courses in and around Kouga, as well as the many avid golfers, Dirk Ellis Volkswagen recently filmed their new Volkswagen commercial at the picturesque St Francis Links Golf Estate. The cast boasts St Francis Links CEO and PGA professional, Jeff Clause, and local physiotherapist Fouché Swart.

It’s every golf player’s ambition to play a great round of golf. A great game ensures a boosted ego. However, a typical day on the golf course doesn’t always go according to plan, and when all is not on par between a golfer and his caddie, disaster strikes.

“When it comes to comedy timing, Jeff and Fouché are birds of a feather. What was supposed to be Eagles and Birdies, soon became bunkers and bushes. They are brilliant, we couldn’t stop laughing,” says Dirk Ellis Volkswagen Marketing Manager, Werner van Wyk.

“We sponsor various golf days and found that a mere vehicle display is just not as an effective marketing tool as we would like it to be. Golfers tend to focus on their game and do not have time in-between to view our Volkswagen vehicles. Therefore, we came up with an interactive way of promoting our product on a particular golf day to ensure players see it. Hence the idea behind the commercial.”

The commercial was filmed over a period of two days by Jeffreys Bay-based production company, Salt Video Productions, and will be flighted on Dirk Ellis Volkswagen’s YouTube channel as well as their social media platforms. Van Wyk promises that the commercial will be very entertaining, especially to golf players.

According to Clause, he has been in front of the camera before, but not to make a commercial

“The team was professional and organised. The number of different angles ultimately led to the great facial expressions. It was hard to be angry when Fouché kept making me laugh,” says Clause.

And what does this PGA professional think of the commercial?

“It turned out great. Dirk Ellis Junior promised me a fish for every 1 000 hits - I just bought a freezer!,” says Clause. “I hope it appears on a bigger screen, as the word out there says it is a hit.”
